First United Methodist Church, Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania

First United Methodist Church is a dynamic family of faith, devoted to making disciples for Jesus Christ and witnessing to His saving love in our church, local, and world communities. We use the acronym WINGS to articulate our mission. Welcome All, Invite Commitment, Nurture Growth, Grow Disciples, Send Servants.

We are a congregation that believes in the call to mission of our United Methodist missionaries. We have budgeted to support various missionaries over the years. The visits by missionaries to our church have enriched our lives and helped us see beyond our walls. Our support helps us stay connected to the work of missionaries in the US. The United Methodist missionaries in the US are providing needed services, particularly in areas that have been hit hardest by the economic downturn. We are proud to support their work.

Missionaries in the United States

Missionaries witness and serve in dramatically different locales and cultures and engage in a range of professions and activities. They come from many places and backgrounds.  Global Ministries commissions missionaries to work within the United States, as well as around the world.

Church and Community Workers are missionaries who work in marginalized communities to strengthen and extend the church into the community, and to welcome and embrace the community within the church.

National Plan for Hispanic/Latino Ministry missionaries serve within annual conferences to engage and strengthen both established and new Hispanic and Latino ministries.

Young Adult missionaries also serve in the United States through the US-2 and Mission Intern programs. Young Adults have many opportunities to serve both within the United States and internationally in up to three-year assignments.

There are various other missionaries serving in special assignments related to ministries with the poor and mission interpretation and education.

Quick Facts

  • Congregations can support United Methodist missionaries through a Covenant Relationship by pledging $5 per member per year, or $2,500 per year.

  • Youth groups and young adult groups are encouraged to form Covenant Relationships with young adult missionaries serving in the US-2 and Mission Intern programs for $5 per member per year.

  • Individuals can establish a Covenant Relationship with a missionary for $500 per year or more.

  • Only about 25 percent of missionary support comes from local church apportionments; therefore,Covenant Relationships are the most important source of missionary support and are vital for continued missionary placements.

  • The Mission Intern Program is a leadership-development and social-justice opportunity for young adults (ages 20-30). The three-year program is divided into a 16-month international work/study assignment and a 16-month action/education assignment in one’s own country.

  3. Ross Says: Missionaries USA commercial: Constructive feedback: good concept, however, the camera moves a bit too quickly form focal point to focal point. Alternative suggestion: have on the bulletin board pictures of ministers, of which a few morph in to live action of interaction with others. :-) October 11th 2011 at 08:10 PM
